Take care and happy crafting to you all...Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07362080144967294866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2654833307066848364.post-10721556527079572802011-04-20T06:28:00.000-07:002011-04-20T06:29:02.361-07:00Rain Barrel on the cheapSo yesterday we made a rain barrel to water our new fruit trees. I looked on line and here and there for rain barrels and was shocked at the price on them. I built ours for around $14 dollars, and people our selling them for upwards of $100. I found all kinds of directions and price range for building them online and was still shocked at the price people were giving out to build these, I knew I could have one and not cost a arm and leg for one.

supplies:

plastic barrel or trash can (works to) $5
male faucet $4.69
1 large washer $1.55
1 o ring $0.30
screen (we already had some old window screen)
nut $1.00
Tools:
drill and spade bit (slightly smaller than faucet)

we cut the top off then drilled a hole slightly smaller than threaded area of faucet(in lower area of barrel about 2inches from bottem), then we put large washer on faucet end and threaded it in the whole
hole put o ring on then nut and that part is finished. ( you could also put on thread tape to but mine didn't leak so I called it good and didn't)
we then attached screen over top to prevent leaves and junk from getting in. I just screwed the screen in around barrel sides, you could use rope or if you have one with removable lid sandwhich screen between them.
put alittle water in and check for leaks, no leaks your good :)
we used some scrap wood we had lying around to build a base to keep off ground and help gravity.
This all took less than a hour to do and it rained last night and we got good rain water to water the fruit trees with..
Now if your worried about mosiqutoes (?) I have read that you can put those disk for standing water and someone suggested small amount of bleach, I will cross this bridge later.
I eventually plan on letting little one paint it, she wants to paint it black and white to look like a milk cow.
I will post pictures as soon as it stops raining, forgot to take pics while building it. oops.Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07362080144967294866noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2654833307066848364.post-13809994613687240352011-04-19T07:11:00.000-07:002011-04-19T07:11:42.133-07:00Once again...Once again I am so sorry for the lack of post. I found a variety of recipes, but this is what we went with and it worked great. ( cant remember were I found it at.)

1 cup cornstarch
1 cup white glue, (elmers or what ever brand you have of school glue)
1 tbsp of lemon juice or clove oil
1 tbsp of mineral oil, i.e baby oil

Mix all your goods together and microwave or you can cook it on the stove, but i did microwave,
microwave for a minute and stir and repeat this two or three times til you have a ball that looks like mashed potatoes as the little one called it, it will pull off the sides of bowl and it will have hard parts and I totally thought I screwed it up, but let it cool so you can handle it then dump her out and knead, and you will end up with a slightly stiff ball. you can add color to it at this piont if you want, with food coloring or paint.
mold your creations and let air dry for a day or two.
we didnt add any color to ours so we could paint it after it dries.

Also to save unsed clay wrap in plastic wrap or zip lock bag.
I found also but have not tried my self that you could heat oven to 350 then turn oven off and put in your clay objects and dry them in the cooling oven.

sorry I dont have pictures of the process to make.

Happy crafting!!Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07362080144967294866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2654833307066848364.post-75932444302999165952010-12-15T07:55:00.000-08:002010-12-15T07:57:52.261-08:00Roman blinds!!!Well I have so been wanting roman blinds, I could never find any I really liked or to fit my windows and custom made was just way to expensive for me.
So what do I do, google of coarse, I knew someone out there had to have a tut on how to make some.
After reading a few tuts on it and not liking what I see I came across this amazing site, she had a amazing tut on it and she made it look so simple. so with 20 bucks and a trip to walmart, here are the ones I made for the craft room/play room. click here for link to Jen Duncan tutorial
Well the craft closet, so didn't work out for me, I spent so much time searching and move this to get to that, that it just made crafting frusrating for me. But that is about to change I took over half the play room for a craft area even my little one has her own craft station now to! I am not even done yet and she has been at it every day glueing and cuting and so on.
Anyway jump over to one of my favorite sites and check it out: crafty crow Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07362080144967294866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2654833307066848364.post-77054207296574954712010-08-18T06:33:00.000-07:002010-08-18T06:33:04.152-07:00I know its been awhile..Well with the move and my craft supplies in a total mess, it has been rather difficult to craft lately.
Then guess what, school time snuck and bit us :( today was the day to start, but I will and promise to get you all some great crafts going, and to get them posted.
Right now we have been working on some sparkle on our stepping stones, we have been making a patio out of concrete and a rock molds, so my little helper has been adding her touch to them with hand prints, foot prints and glass rocks.
So with a little of plaster of paris and so time we did it! She loves it, she loved finding the tracks and identifing what animal made them, and getting to bring home a momento of are walk.

Supplies:
plaster of paris
bucket to mix
water
stick to stir

mix the plaster of paris to the directions on the box. pour into tracks and wait for it to harden, some took 10 minutes so to 30 or so before we could pop them out.
Let the little ones make tracks to and make a casting of their own tracks..
This is a deer track, it wass the best track we could find of a deer but I love how it looks like a heart.
We have been working on making homemade water colors it was fun and easy as could be...
Here is the recipe:

3tbsp cornstarch

3tbsp baking soda
3tbsp vinger
1 1/2 tsp light corn syrup
(if you dont have light corn syrup you can mix up 2 parts suger to 1 part water, boil til well dissolve.)
food coloring

mix first three together, little one got a kick out of the foaming mix, add syrup, mix well.
seperate into small containers then add food coloring, a couple of drops each.

I have used pill containers, the ones with like seven compartments, and a paint tray.
you can paint right away with them or allow to dry for later use ( took two days to dry out)

I gave her q-tips to paint the picture above with instead of paint brushes, she thought I was crazy but she decide it was fun and the q-tips looked neat in the end..Mommyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07362080144967294866noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2654833307066848364.post-5832591344015139152010-05-20T09:53:00.000-07:002010-05-20T09:53:06.064-07:00coaster, trivets or wat ever you call them..<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Me and little miss made this for mother days and gave them to grandma for a present.
